Colombia Research Overview //

Social leaders and conflict victims in Colombia experience unique digital and ontological security concerns when accessing, and sharing information. By engaging with victims and social leaders who create spaces for dialogue in Popayán, Colombia we can understand new security and privacy possibilities with these populations. Utilizing ethnographic methods to work collaboratively with participants, it was possible to observe daily security practices and therefore step towards a better understanding of how experiences of security and privacy go beyond technology usage in conflict-afflicted regions and are deeply intertwined with gender, trauma, land and legacies of conflict. With this knowledge we can better understand how to design for desirable, peaceful, futures which safely and appropriately incorporate technology, instead of designing from a position of fear or adversary.
